Eligibility Criteria for the PMAY Scheme

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana is an initiative undertaken by the government of India to provide affordable housing facilities to all sections of the society. The scheme aims to build over 20 million affordable houses over the next few years, in order to ensure that every citizen of India has a home to call his or her own.  The scheme aims to provide affordable housing to both urban and rural residents of the country. It was launched by the Prime Minister in the year 2015. In essence, the PMAY scheme aims to provide a subsidy on housing loans to prospective homebuyers. The extent of the subsidy will vary depending on the socioeconomic status of the homebuyer. The houses constructed under the PMAY scheme shall be built so as to be eco-friendly and sustainable.
Mentioned below are the broad outlines of the eligibility criteria that those wanting to apply for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana must meet:

  • The applicant must not own a pucca house in any part of the country. The immediate family members of the applicant should also not own such a house in India in their names.
  • The applicant must never have availed the benefits of a central or state housing scheme in the past. Nor should any of his or her immediate family members have done so.
  • The property that shall be bought under the PMAY scheme must be wholly or partly owned by at least one adult female member of the applicant’s family.
  • The property must ideally be located in a statutory town, as defined by the 2011 census. The property can also be located in the adjacent planning area of one such town.
